4D – Is it the Next Generation of 3D?

I just visited a small mini cinema for a 4D movie or was it a ride? Either way, it was an experience.


First I have a couple dozen movies to choose from. They all sounded very exciting but I always love being scared so I went for a scary one. I think 3D technology and horror was always a good mix, so I hoped it would be good with 4D as well.

After picking the movie they handed my wife and I our glasses and led us into the small cinema. It looks like it seats only 4 people allowing for a more personal feel. If there’s safety in numbers, I won’t be feeling it now.

The right begins and the seats are moving like a roller coaster. I was surprised with how strong the feeling was considering we didn’t actually go anywhere. It was shaking and twisting and turning giving you a very realistic feel the entire time.

Adding to that realistic effect was the 3D movie. We were given some cool looking 3D glasses to wear and  I quickly forgot that they were on. All I notice are the scary abominations chasing after me in a true cliffhanger fashion. Each time I feel like I’m done for but we get away and the story continues.

3D Movie Review - Avatar

I’ve seen many excellent 3D movies and this was the best! I felt immersed in a fantasy that was bigger than life. I think the best part of the movie was the story line and the acting. Both were very convincing and very real. James Cameron is a genius!

This movie definitely shows how well 3D can be done. The manner in which 3D was incorporated was amazing. The 3D effects were there to enhance the effects of the movie and not to take over the movie. I was really able to get right into the movie and it felt like I was really there.

Everything in the movie looked so life like and real.

I highly recommend you see the best 3D movie I have ever seen, Avatar!

Sample 3D Photos

My coworker took some very nice photos that I want to put up on the web.  He took the left and right images and I used some software to help me put them together.  Still, you will have to use your left right buttons to control the degree of separation.  I will try to improve on that with more practice or different software.
These are 3D images done with a pair of 2D cameras.  If you want to know more about how to take 3D pictures just look for my previous article about how to take 3D pictures.

This first picture is of a little guy that came to visit all those tourists at the Hoover Dam.

He was such a good sport that I had to take another of him.  I hope you can adjust the photo on your 3D monitor or 3D TV to get the right picture.

A Bigger Than Life 3D Monitor

Pavonine Korea has come out with a 3D monitor that is a monster. Actually, it’s a bunch of monitors put together called the Multicube. They have put multiple 46” 3D monitors together into a much bigger display. The Multicube comes in two huge sizes, 4 units and 9 units. The four 3D monitor Multicube is a 2 by 2 and the 9 3D monitor Multicube is 3 by 3. That’s right, try watching a 3D movie on nine 46” 3D monitors! I’ve seen it at KES and it was amazing.

3D Movie Review: My Bloody Valentine

This 3D movie was awesome! I really found the movie to be quite fun to watch. Scary movies are always interesting for me. But when it’s in 3D, now that takes it to a whole new level! Definitely not a movie for kids, the gore is extreme and popping out at you in 3D!
The quality of the 3D effects was amazing. They are really turning 3D movie making into an art.
As for the acting and the plot, it was surprisingly good. They didn’t sacrifice the movie for the 3D effects.
I highly recommend this movie to any adults who like scary movies.

Where to find 3D movies?

So now you’ve got your 3D monitor or your 3D TV, but what can you watch in stereoscopic 3D? Well if you look there are a lot of places where you can find it. The internet is full of places where you can watch 3D movies or look at 3D pictures. Some are for use with 3D monitors and passive glasses, and some are anaglyph. It’s fun trying both!
Try Miracube for some samples. They are in the side by side format and are free to watch!

Another source is YouTube. I know you probably only watch 2D videos on YouTube but they also have stereo 3D videos as well.

If you have a few bucks to spend, then Amazon has 3D movies on DVD and CD for sale. New or used, there is a big selection. Especially good if you like scary movies in 3D!

One of the best places to go is Google Videos. It’s funny because this is one of the last places I thought of and I don’t know why. Google Videos is fun and easy to browse and watch a wide variety of stereoscopic 3D videos.

Autostereoscopic 3D: No Glasses but still 3D

In the business people are often talking about stereoscopic and autostereoscopic but what do they mean?
Stereoscopic is a 3D picture or movie that has two points of view. You see them in stereo giving you the 3D effect. When you put on the glasses, they filter the images so each eye only sees one picture. That allows you to see 3D. This is often used for 3D movies and 3D computer games, but can also be applied to many professional areas like design, medical/bio, GIS and product presentation. Now you can work with 3D on the job and then go home and watch it on your 3D TV or 3D monitor.
As for Autostereoscopic, it is similar to stereoscopic 3D but you can see the 3D effect without wearing the glasses. With this kind of 3D, there may be two points of view or multiple points of view. There are different ways of making these displays such as the parallax barrier and lenticular lenses.
